Jack (Bootsie) Thorington, Jr.
Jack (Bootsie) Thorington Jr., 87, of Montgomery, Alabama, whose family has been associated with the history of the City of Montgomery since its founding in the 1830s, died Friday, March 28, 2025. Bootsie was born in Montgomery on November 19, 1937, to Jack and Helen Brooke Thorington. He is a direct descendant of Col. Jack Thorington, the second mayor of Montgomery. He is survived by his daughter Marion Brooke Thorington of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and sister, Marion Thorington Conover (John) of Huntsville. He was predeceased by his high school sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Charlotte Rawls Thorington, and daughter Lane Roberts Thorington, both of Montgomery; and by his sister-in-law, Corella Rawls Johnson of Gadsden. Other survivors include niece Helen Conover (Rob Minor) of Huntsville; nephews John Conover (Kelli) of Huntsville and Jack Conover (Suze Kemper) of Austin, Texas; niece Ashley Johnson Mason (William) of Durham, North Carolina; nephew Francis Collier Rawls III (Janette) of Madison; niece Susan Rawls Mullinax (Steven) of Clanton; and brother-in-law, William Roscoe Johnson III of Gadsden. Bootsie graduated in 1956 from Sidney Lanier High School and in 1960 from the University of Alabama, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. A longtime golfer, Bootsie was on the golf team in high school and was junior champion at Montgomery Country Club, where he was a member for many years. Bootsie was a salesman for Jenkins Brick and an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years. He taught Sunday School to elementary students who fondly remember his lessons and also participated in the Cedar Park ministry. He shared his home with a succession of pug dogs, the latest being Rowdy and Hubert.
Henry Thomas Sledge
Mr. Henry Thomas Sledge Sr. retired from the United States Air Force after 28 years of service. A decorated veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. Later in his Air Force career he served as Flight Engineer aboard a C-130 aircraft used in air rescue. He donated much of his time to the Boy Scouts of America and was a long-time member of the Prattville First United Methodist Church.
Jobe "Jay" Thomas Ott
Jay grew up in Montgomery and graduated Lanier in 1951, leaving that day for the U.S.M.C. and later to Korea, where he was twice wounded and received the Purple Heart. He earned sociology and social work degrees, and later earned his Juris Doctor at Jones School of Law at age 62, practicing Elder Law for 16 years. He was past president of the Montgomery Art Guild, appeared in 13 Little Theater productions, and served on the museum board.
Christian Owens Stevens
Christian Owens Stevens, of Canton, GA traded his parachute for angel wings on February 17, 2020. Christian served in the United States Army as an Infantry Officer, stationed with the prestigious 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC, completing Ranger school and skydiving demo jumps. He also led the VFW Operation Santa charity, raising over $300,000 for children of forward-deployed troops.
